Open space that lets us break into smaller groupings without everyone standing on top of each other. Good light that isn’t fighting against a parking lot or a busy road. Somewhere comfortable enough that grandma isn’t standing on uneven gravel in her nice shoes. And a backup plan if it’s raining, because hello, we live in Oregon.

1. Bush’s Pasture Park, Salem

This one is close to home for me and it is a workhorse for big groups. Wide open lawns, mature trees, and the historic Bush House in the background if you want something a little more elegant. There’s plenty of parking and it’s stroller and wheelchair friendly, which matters a lot when you’ve got both ends of the age spectrum in one shoot.

Best time to go is late afternoon for soft golden light, and spring is gorgeous when the magnolia trees are blooming.

2. Silver Falls State Park, Silverton

Yes it’s a bit of a drive depending on where your family is coming from, but if you want a session that feels like an event rather than just photos, this is it. The waterfalls and forest trails give you incredible variety in one session, and there’s enough space along the trails to spread a big group out for some candid walking shots instead of everyone just standing and smiling.

Heads up that some of the best waterfall spots require a short hike, so this works best if your group skews a little more mobile. If you’ve got family members who need to stay close to the parking area, stick to the South Falls day use area which has gorgeous views without much walking at all.

3. The Oregon Coast, Lincoln City or Pacific City

There is something about the ocean that makes everyone instantly relax, even grumpy teenagers. The wide open beach gives you tons of room for big groups, and the dramatic backdrop means you don’t need much else to make the photos feel special.

Just plan around the tide schedule, because nobody wants to be scrambling to move the whole family because the water is creeping up. And bring a change of shoes. Trust me.

4. Minto-Brown Island Park, Salem

This is one of my go to spots for families who want something natural but easy. Flat walking paths, open fields, and a mix of tree lined areas for shade. It’s huge, so even on a busy weekend you can usually find a quiet corner.

It’s especially great for sessions with babies or older family members since the paths are flat and there’s plenty of parking close to the good photo spots.

5. Champoeg State Heritage Area, Portland

A bit of a hidden gem honestly. Big open meadows, river views, and historic buildings if you want some variety in your backdrops throughout the session. It rarely feels crowded which is a blessing when you’re already managing fifteen personalities.

Fall is stunning here with the changing leaves, but it’s lovely most of the year.

6. Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Dallas

If your family loves the outdoors and wants something a little more wide open and wild feeling, Baskett Slough is a beautiful choice. Rolling hills, open fields, and big sky views give you a peaceful, uncluttered backdrop that lets the focus stay on your family instead of a busy scene.

It’s a quieter, less developed spot than some of the others on this list, so there isn’t much in the way of paved paths or amenities. It works best for families who are comfortable walking on natural terrain and don’t need anything close to accessible for mobility concerns. Spring and early summer are especially pretty out here when everything is green and the wildflowers are out.

7. Black Butte Ranch, Sisters

Upper North Falls (Underrated + Way More Private)

Upper North Falls is like South Falls’ cooler, quieter sibling.

• 65 feet tall
• You can get much closer to the actual falls depending on the time of  year
• Way fewer people

Trade-off:
Smaller parking lot and the trail can get muddy, its a bit more of a rustic spot but it’s only a .3 mile hike to get there from the parking lot.

Worth it?
If you want your proposal to feel personal and uninterrupted – 100%.

The Trail of Ten Falls (For the Adventure Couple)

If your relationship thrives on “let’s make a day of it,” this is your move.

• 7.2-mile loop
• 10 waterfalls
• 3–4 hours total

Best proposal spots along the trail:

• Lower South Falls (moody, dramatic framing)
• Double Falls (tallest in the park, fewer crowds)
• Middle North Falls (if you want to be surrounded by loud crashing water)
• Drake Falls (quiet, intimate, low-key magic)

The farther you hike, the fewer people you’ll see. Translation: more privacy, more “just us” energy. 

When to Propose (This Matters More Than You Think)

Timing can make or break the vibe and your photos.

Golden hour (best option):

• Hour after sunrise or before sunset
• Soft, warm light
• Fewer crowds
• Can watch the sunset at the Viewpoint

Morning (highly underrated):

• Quiet

• Waterfalls feel extra peaceful

Midday (avoid if you can):

The Best Season at Silver Falls

This park is going to be beautiful all year long but each season has its own unique benefits and downsides. 

Spring (Feb-May)

Benefits:

• Full water falls, lots of raging water falls
• Fewer crowds for sure

Downsides: 

• High likelihood of rainy weather. This is why we have so many waterfalls. It rains. A lot. 
• Trails can be muddy

Summer (June-Aug)

Benefits:

• Sunshine! The chance of rain goes WAY down. Not to zero, but much less.
• Lush forests, everything is growing! Even wildflowers are blooming

Downsides:

• Crowds. Kids are out of school. The weather is great, but you’ll be sharing the park with tens of thousands of visitors each week. 
• Earlier sunrise and later sunsets- meaning if you want to beat the crowds in the morning, you’ll need to wake up EARLY. 

Fall (Sept-Nov)

Benefits:

• Slightly less crowds
• Still good chance of good weather
• Chance of leaves changing colors

Downsides: 

• The rainy season does return, generally end of September, early October
• The waterfalls will be at their lowest at this time, depending on how much rain and snow melt off we got. 

Winter (Dec-Jan)

Benefits:

• Way less crowds!
• Rainy moody vibes galore!
• Waterfalls will be filling back up, water levels will be more impressive

Downsides: 

• Rain, cold and even ice! 
• When there is ice, snow or storms, parts of the park can be closed for safety.

Don’t Forget:

• Consider what they’ll be wearing. Will they be excited to have that look immortalized? Is there a way to make sure they’re happy with their outfit/hairstyle before heading out?
• Consider bringing their make-up bag or a cute outfit to change into after the question has been popped so they can feel beautiful and photo ready! 
• Their hands will likely be in the photo, so how can you make sure their nails are done the week before? Again, including a bestie can keep this in stealth mode. 
• Does this fit their vibe? Are they a total city person who would feel out of place and uncomfortable in a rustic forest setting? Or are they most at home in the woods and a natural environment like this totally suits their personality and your relationship. 
• Where will you head afterwards? Maybe make celebratory dinner reservations, or invite family and friends to meet you there to be the first to congratulate you both!

A Perfect Portland Elopement Day

Sheila and Adrian’s elopement through Portland and the Columbia Gorge shows how amazing a multi-location wedding day can be! Their day flowed from city to forest to waterfall to vista point – creating a rich set of memories and stunning photos.

Their adventure began at the stylish Hotel Grand Stark, a boutique hotel in Portland’s East Side. The hotel’s mix of vintage charm and modern comforts made a cozy spot for them to prep together before their adventures.

Hoyt Arboretum in the Springtime

From there, they headed to Hoyt Arboretum, where we found a few spring flowers blooming among the towering trees. The mix of rain and sunshine created that classic Pacific Northwest mood – and some amazing light for photos!

The Ceremony at Latourell Falls

After exploring the arboretum, Sheila and Adrian drove to the stunning Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. Despite the pouring rain, they met their two friends who came to witness their vows.

The tall, plunging waterfall made a jaw-dropping backdrop for their small ceremony. The rain added to the moment rather than taking away from it, there’s something deeply romantic about saying “I do” while surrounded by the rushing sounds of water and rain in a lush green gorge!

Sheila and Adrian didn’t mind getting a little wet, they are troopers!  They knew this was the perfect spot to mark their commitment to each other.

For the grand finale, the group drove to Vista House at Crown Point. This historic stone building sits on a bluff 733 feet above the Columbia River, offering panoramic views of the gorge.

Here, Sheila and Adrian:

• Watched the sunset paint the gorge in gold and pink

The light at Vista House was pure magic as the day came to a close. We even got treated with a rainbow! The photos capture that warm glow that only happens during the golden hour as the sun sets over the Columbia River Gorge.

Who knew a graveyard could be so romantic? Deserie and James wanted their engagement photos to show off their darker, spookier style. So we headed to Pratum Cemetery outside of Salem as the sun was setting to capture their love in a way that truly fit their personalities. Selena and Gretchen chose Milo McIver State Park for their big day – and for good reason! This gorgeous park near Portland is their favorite spot to float the river in inner tubes. The couple brought that same playful energy to their wedding day.

The fashion choices? Bold and beautiful! One bride stunned in a gold dress that caught the sunlight, while the other rocked a custom green suit that turned heads. Their wedding party joined the color parade in sequined outfits that sparkled with every move.
