You’ve got a toddler who has decided today is the day to test gravity by throwing themselves backward every five seconds. A teenager who would rather be literally anywhere else. And grandpa, bless him, who “doesn’t really do photos” but is going to do this one because you asked nicely four times.

Here’s the good news. After photographing families of every size and combination, at both weddings and family portrait sessions, I’ve learned that cooperation isn’t really about getting everyone to behave. It’s about setting things up so good moments happen naturally, instead of forcing everyone into stiff poses and hoping for the best. I’ve collected lots of family photo tips over the last 16 years of documenting all ages!

Let’s break this down by who you’re working with, because a toddler and a grandparent might need very different approaches.

Babies and Toddlers

Little ones don’t really understand what’s happening, but they can pick up on your stress level as the parent. If you’re nervous and frantic, they’ll feel that. The more you can off load the worry of “getting them to smile” onto me, and you just get to be in the moment with them, the better. 

 Don’t expect them to look at the camera and smile on command. Instead, give them something real to react to.

Bring a favorite toy,tickle them right before the shot, or just let them wander and explore while we capture it candidly. Some of the best photos of little ones happen when nobody is asking them to do anything at all.

Time of day matters a lot here too. Plan around nap schedules instead of fighting them. A well rested toddler who isn’t starving is going to give you so much more than an overtired one who’s already past the breaking point.

And snacks. Always bring snacks!

Kids and Tweens

This age group usually wants to cooperate, they just get bored fast. The trick is keeping things moving and giving them small jobs or moments of fun in between the more posed shots.

Let them run around for a minute before we line everyone up. Give them a little competition, like seeing who can make the silliest face or jump the highest. Kids tend to relax once they realize this isn’t going to be an hour of standing still and smiling on command.

Also, lower your expectations for perfectly placed hair and tucked in shirts. The slightly messy, real version of your kid is the one you’re going to want to remember anyway.

Teenagers

Ah, teenagers. The group most likely to roll their eyes the moment a camera comes out.

Honestly, the best approach here is to not make a big deal out of it. The more we treat the session like a big important production, the more resistance you’re going to get. Keep things low pressure, give them clear expectations ahead of time about how long this will actually take, and consider letting them have some say in at least one part of it, even something small like which jacket they wear.

A lot of teens actually loosen up once they see their parents and grandparents being a little goofy too. Nobody wants to be the only one trying.

Parents and Adult Siblings

This group is usually pretty easy, but they’re also the ones managing everyone else’s stress, which means they show up already a little tense. If you’re the one organizing this whole thing, give yourself permission to let go of perfection. The day will go more smoothly if you’re not also trying to control every variable.

One thing that helps a lot on wedding days is deciding ahead of time who is going to gently herd people into position. It doesn’t need to be the photographer giving every instruction. Having one designated person who knows the family but won’t necessarily be in every photo that can say “okay, cousins, you’re up” keeps things moving without it feeling like a drill sergeant situation.

Grandparents and Older Family Members

Grandparents often show up a little nervous about photos, especially if it’s been a while since their last professional session. The best thing you can do here is keep the pace relaxed and give them plenty of breaks if the session is on the longer side.

Comfortable seating nearby makes a huge difference, even if it’s just a low wall or a blanket on the ground. Standing for long stretches is hard on a lot of older joints, and a tired, achy grandparent is not going to give you a relaxed smile.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of just letting them interact naturally with the grandkids instead of posing them. Some of my favorite photos from big family sessions are completely unplanned moments between grandparents and grandkids that happened while we were technically setting up the “real” shot.

Beyond the age specific stuff, a few practical things tend to make or break how smoothly the whole day goes.

Keep the big group portions short. Nobody, especially kids and grandparents, has unlimited patience for standing in formation. I like to knock out the large group combinations early while everyone still has energy, then move into smaller groupings and candid moments after.

Build in an activity, not just poses. Some of the most relaxed, genuine photos happen when people are actually doing something together instead of just standing and smiling. A water balloon fight, blowing bubbles, baking cookies together in the kitchen, tossing a frisbee, even just walking and talking. Give everyone something to actually do and the posing pressure disappears. People stop thinking about the camera and just start being a family, which is exactly the kind of photo you’ll want to look back on.

You can even make the whole session about some sort of wild adventurous activity like this family did, for their color war on the beach!

Build in breaks. Even a five minute pause to let people get water or let the baby nurse can completely reset the mood for the rest of the session.

Pick a location that matches your group’s needs. If you’ve got family members who tire easily or have mobility concerns, choose somewhere flat and close to parking instead of somewhere gorgeous but a quarter mile uphill. I actually put together a whole list of Oregon locations that work well for big groups if you want some ideas.

Pick a time of day when everyone is happiest. Despite the best light in the middle of summer will likely be the hour before sunset, that might be the witching hour for lil toddlers. Happy kiddos is preferable to golden light. You can look up the sunset time on any date here.

Communicate the plan ahead of time. A quick text to the family group chat the day before with the time, location, and a reminder about outfits saves you so much stress in the moment. Nobody likes finding out the plan five minutes before it’s supposed to start.

Hire someone who’s done this before. This isn’t me tooting my own horn, I promise. But a photographer who has experience specifically with big, multi generational groups is going to know how to keep things moving, how to read the room when someone’s getting cranky, and how to capture the real moments instead of just checking boxes. It makes a genuinely huge difference in how the day feels.

The Real Goal Isn’t Perfect Behavior

Here’s the thing I wish more families knew going into a big session like this. The goal isn’t to get fifteen people to behave perfectly for sixty straight minutes. The goal is to create a handful of moments, some posed and some completely candid, that actually capture what your family feels like together.

The slightly chaotic, real version of your family is so much more valuable than a stiff, perfectly composed one where everyone is internally counting down the seconds until it’s over.

So give yourself grace going into this. Expect a little bit of chaos. And know that in between moments, the laughing, the bribing toddlers with crackers, the grandkids sneaking up on grandpa, those are usually the photos everyone ends up loving the most anyway.

The Estate currently offers packages for elopements and intimate wine country weddings, so it is a great option for couples planning a smaller celebration too.

2. Zenith Vineyard, Salem Oregon

Zenith Vineyard is tucked into the rolling hills of the Eola-Amity Hills near Salem. You get all the vineyard beauty outside plus a large, custom-designed ballroom inside. Basically, Oregon weather can do its weird little thing and you still have a solid plan.

The ballroom has tall ceilings, a big wood-burning fireplace, and plenty of room for a ceremony, dinner, and a hopping dance floor. There is also a long patio overlooking the vineyard, a private getting-ready space, and lots of places to sneak away for photos.

5. Maysara Winery, McMinnville Oregon

Maysara Winery is located at Momtazi Vineyard near McMinnville and has one of the most distinctive winery spaces in the Willamette Valley.

The stone and wood architecture feels warm, dramatic, and a little bit magical. It is a beautiful fit for couples who love wine-country scenery but want something with more texture and personality than a traditional ballroom. The property offers one of Oregon wine country’s larger indoor and outdoor event settings, giving you flexibility for both your ceremony and reception.

There are plenty of beautiful photo options here too. The vineyard, rustic stonework, huge doors, and surrounding landscape give every part of the day its own look. Your gallery can feel varied without spending your wedding day driving from one location to another.

The venue can accommodate up to 200 guests, and the historic Governor’s House provides two private getting-ready suites plus a gathering room for the wedding party. • Include the meaningful details

Bring out the wine you love, custom glasses, family keepsakes, or anything else that tells your story. Those small details help your wedding photos feel personal instead of generic.

• Leave room to enjoy the day

You do not need to spend hours posing for pictures. A thoughtful timeline gives us time for great photos while keeping you present for the hugs, happy tears, terrible dance moves, and everything else you will actually want to remember.

So picking the right location actually matters a lot more than people think.

A great spot for a couple’s engagement photos is not always a great spot for fifteen people. You need room to spread out, somewhere to sit down when little legs get tired, parking that doesn’t require a half mile hike before the shoot even starts, and ideally a bathroom somewhere nearby. Glamorous, I know.

As someone who has photographed families all over Oregon, here are ten locations I genuinely love for big group sessions, along with why they work, when to go, and a few honest heads up moments so you’re not caught off guard.

What Actually Makes a Location Good for a Big Family Group

Before we get into the list, here’s what I’m looking for when I scout a spot for an extended family session.

Open space that lets us break into smaller groupings without everyone standing on top of each other. Good light that isn’t fighting against a parking lot or a busy road. Somewhere comfortable enough that grandma isn’t standing on uneven gravel in her nice shoes. And a backup plan if it’s raining, because hello, we live in Oregon.

1. Bush’s Pasture Park, Salem

This one is close to home for me and it is a workhorse for big groups. Wide open lawns, mature trees, and the historic Bush House in the background if you want something a little more elegant. There’s plenty of parking and it’s stroller and wheelchair friendly, which matters a lot when you’ve got both ends of the age spectrum in one shoot.

Best time to go is late afternoon for soft golden light, and spring is gorgeous when the magnolia trees are blooming.

2. Silver Falls State Park, Silverton

Yes it’s a bit of a drive depending on where your family is coming from, but if you want a session that feels like an event rather than just photos, this is it. The waterfalls and forest trails give you incredible variety in one session, and there’s enough space along the trails to spread a big group out for some candid walking shots instead of everyone just standing and smiling.

Heads up that some of the best waterfall spots require a short hike, so this works best if your group skews a little more mobile. If you’ve got family members who need to stay close to the parking area, stick to the South Falls day use area which has gorgeous views without much walking at all.

3. The Oregon Coast, Lincoln City or Newport

There is something about the ocean that makes everyone instantly relax, even grumpy teenagers. The wide open beach gives you tons of room for big groups, and the dramatic backdrop means you don’t need much else to make the photos feel special.

Just plan around the tide schedule, because nobody wants to be scrambling to move the whole family because the water is creeping up. And bring a change of shoes. Trust me.

4. Minto-Brown Island Park, Salem

This is one of my go to spots for families who want something natural but easy. Flat walking paths, open fields, and a mix of tree lined areas for shade. It’s huge, so even on a busy weekend you can usually find a quiet corner.

It’s especially great for sessions with babies or older family members since the paths are flat and there’s plenty of parking close to the good photo spots.

5. Champoeg State Heritage Area, Portland

A bit of a hidden gem honestly. Big open meadows, river views, and historic buildings if you want some variety in your backdrops throughout the session. It rarely feels crowded which is a blessing when you’re already managing fifteen personalities.

Fall is stunning here with the changing leaves, but it’s lovely most of the year.

6. Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Dallas

If your family loves the outdoors and wants something a little more wide open and wild feeling, Baskett Slough is a beautiful choice. Rolling hills, open fields, and big sky views give you a peaceful, uncluttered backdrop that lets the focus stay on your family instead of a busy scene.

It’s a quieter, less developed spot than some of the others on this list, so there isn’t much in the way of paved paths or amenities. It works best for families who are comfortable walking on natural terrain and don’t need anything close to accessible for mobility concerns. Spring and early summer are especially pretty out here when everything is green and the wildflowers are out.

7. Black Butte Ranch, Sisters

If your family is scattered between the valley and Central Oregon, Black Butte Ranch is a beautiful spot to meet in the middle. Wide open meadows with the mountains right there in the background, plus a relaxed resort feel that makes everyone settle in instead of rushing through photos.

It’s especially great if part of your family is already staying out there for a reunion weekend, since you don’t have to drag anyone anywhere. Just know it’s private property, so sessions need to be coordinated with guests or residents in mind, and it’s a bit of a haul if your whole family is coming from the Willamette Valley.

8. Deepwood Museum and Gardens, Salem

If you want something a little more storybook, Deepwood Estate is hard to beat. The historic Queen Anne style house and the formal English gardens give you a gorgeous, romantic backdrop that feels totally different from a typical park session. It’s a great pick if your family wants photos that feel a bit more elevated or timeless.

It’s a smaller space than some of the others on this list, so it works best for families who don’t need a ton of room to spread out, or who want a session that moves through a few distinct garden rooms rather than one big open area. Just know that as a historic property, there may be a small usage fee or reservation required for photo sessions, so it’s worth checking ahead of time.

9. Studio 22, Salem

Sometimes the best move for a big family group is skipping outdoor locations altogether and heading into a real studio space. Studio 22 gives you clean, controlled lighting no matter what the weather is doing outside, which takes one entire variable off the table when you’re coordinating a large group. No fighting harsh sun, no scrambling because of rain, just consistent light the whole session.

It’s a great option if you have family members who tire easily or use mobility aids, since everything is flat, indoors, and close together. It also tends to work well for sessions that need to happen on a tighter timeline, since there’s no travel time between backdrops and no waiting around for the light to cooperate.

10. A Backyard or Family Property

Sometimes the best location isn’t a park at all. If someone in your family has a beautiful backyard, an orchard, or some acreage, that familiarity can actually make everyone relax more than a public park would. No driving, no crowds, and the kids already know where the snacks are.

• The main viewing platform (easy, dramatic, stunning)
• Under the Falls (it will be wet! Lots of mist and back spray under there)
• Lower trail near the base (more immersive, slightly more private)

Morning light here is the chef’s kiss. Soft, glowy, and way fewer people.

Heads up:
It does get busy especially on weekends in the Summer. If you want something more intimate, aim for a weekday or early morning. Most of these paths are paved and this is easily the most accessible waterfall as it’s closest to the visitor center, the main large parking lot and THE ONE everyone wants a selfie with!

Upper North Falls is like South Falls’ cooler, quieter sibling.

• You can get much closer to the actual falls depending on the time of  year
• Way fewer people

Trade-off:
Smaller parking lot and the trail can get muddy, its a bit more of a rustic spot but it’s only a .3 mile hike to get there from the parking lot.

Worth it?

Spring (Feb-May)

Benefits:

• Full water falls, lots of raging water falls
• Fewer crowds for sure

Downsides: 

• High likelihood of rainy weather. This is why we have so many waterfalls. It rains. A lot. 
• Trails can be muddy

Summer (June-Aug)

Benefits:

• Sunshine! The chance of rain goes WAY down. Not to zero, but much less.
• Lush forests, everything is growing! Even wildflowers are blooming

Downsides:

• Crowds. Kids are out of school. The weather is great, but you’ll be sharing the park with tens of thousands of visitors each week. 
• Earlier sunrise and later sunsets- meaning if you want to beat the crowds in the morning, you’ll need to wake up EARLY. 

Fall (Sept-Nov)

Benefits:

• Slightly less crowds
• Still good chance of good weather
• Chance of leaves changing colors

Downsides: 

• The rainy season does return, generally end of September, early October
• The waterfalls will be at their lowest at this time, depending on how much rain and snow melt off we got. 

Winter (Dec-Jan)

Benefits:

• Way less crowds!
• Rainy moody vibes galore!
• Waterfalls will be filling back up, water levels will be more impressive

Downsides: 

• Rain, cold and even ice! 
• When there is ice, snow or storms, parts of the park can be closed for safety.

Don’t Forget:

• Consider what they’ll be wearing. Will they be excited to have that look immortalized? Is there a way to make sure they’re happy with their outfit/hairstyle before heading out?
• Consider bringing their make-up bag or a cute outfit to change into after the question has been popped so they can feel beautiful and photo ready! 
• Their hands will likely be in the photo, so how can you make sure their nails are done the week before? Again, including a bestie can keep this in stealth mode. 
• Does this fit their vibe? Are they a total city person who would feel out of place and uncomfortable in a rustic forest setting? Or are they most at home in the woods and a natural environment like this totally suits their personality and your relationship.

Take Sara and Alex’s wedding, for example. They intentionally chose a pet-friendly venue and included their dog, Ray, as their “Dog-of-Honor.” Ray wore a cute outfit, had a dedicated dog handler for times the couple couldn’t be with him, and even walked down the aisle with the best man. The handler brought Ray to us for photos and returned him afterward. A Perfect Portland Elopement Day

Sheila and Adrian’s elopement through Portland and the Columbia Gorge shows how amazing a multi-location wedding day can be! Their day flowed from city to forest to waterfall to vista point – creating a rich set of memories and stunning photos.

Their adventure began at the stylish Hotel Grand Stark, a boutique hotel in Portland’s East Side. The hotel’s mix of vintage charm and modern comforts made a cozy spot for them to prep together before their adventures.

Hoyt Arboretum in the Springtime

From there, they headed to Hoyt Arboretum, where we found a few spring flowers blooming among the towering trees. The mix of rain and sunshine created that classic Pacific Northwest mood – and some amazing light for photos!

The Ceremony at Latourell Falls

After exploring the arboretum, Sheila and Adrian drove to the stunning Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. Despite the pouring rain, they met their two friends who came to witness their vows.

The tall, plunging waterfall made a jaw-dropping backdrop for their small ceremony. The rain added to the moment rather than taking away from it, there’s something deeply romantic about saying “I do” while surrounded by the rushing sounds of water and rain in a lush green gorge!

Sheila and Adrian didn’t mind getting a little wet, they are troopers!  They knew this was the perfect spot to mark their commitment to each other.

Sunset at Vista House

For the grand finale, the group drove to Vista House at Crown Point. This historic stone building sits on a bluff 733 feet above the Columbia River, offering panoramic views of the gorge.

Here, Sheila and Adrian:

• Had their first dance as the clouds parted
• Toasted with champagne to their new chapter
• Watched the sunset paint the gorge in gold and pink

The light at Vista House was pure magic as the day came to a close. We even got treated with a rainbow! The photos capture that warm glow that only happens during the golden hour as the sun sets over the Columbia River Gorge.

Who knew a graveyard could be so romantic? Deserie and James wanted their engagement photos to show off their darker, spookier style. So we headed to Pratum Cemetery outside of Salem as the sun was setting to capture their love in a way that truly fit their personalities. Deserie was worried that her request for spooky engagement photos in Salem Oregon would weird me out, but lucky for her, I’m all about doing something different and unique!
